Our History
Rocscience was born in 1987 at the University of Toronto, where the Rock Engineering Group began developing advanced numerical tools to better understand complex ground behaviour. Early work in 3D stress analysis, spanning hydraulic fracturing and complex excavations, set a foundation for combining rigorous engineering with intuitive, visual interpretation.
As industry demand grew, these tools evolved into a new generation of software designed to address increasingly complex challenges across geotechnical engineering and beyond. In 1996, Rocscience was established as an independent company, with a clear mandate to advance engineering modelling, analysis and design through innovation and practical application.
Today, Rocscience is shaping the future of engineering software by delivering integrated solutions that support multiple disciplines, including geotechnical, mining, structural, hydrogeology, and energy. Backed by a world-class team of engineers, developers, and researchers, the company continues to push the boundaries of modelling, data integration, and AI-driven workflows that empower users to solve complex problems with greater confidence, speed, and insight.
Our Expanded Software Platform
Engineers across disciplines face the same fundamental challenge: making critical decisions based on reliable models and data. In 2023, Rocscience partnered with TA Associates, a growth equity firm, to accelerate expansion into adjacent engineering disciplines — first organically, then through acquisitions. Since 2024, the company has welcomed:
- DIANA — Advanced nonlinear FEA for complex structures and safety-critical engineering applications
- 3GSM — 3D rock mass characterisation, blast optimisation, and fragmentation analysis
- 2SI — Structural analysis, design, and verification for international code compliance
- Rockfield — Wellbore stability, sanding prediction, and advanced geomechanics analysis
- Aquanty — Integrated surface water and groundwater modelling and forecasting
Each acquisition extends our platform's capabilities with the same rigour Rocscience built its name on — just applied to more materials and more complex projects. And our roots in academia remain strong, with more than 600 academic partnerships worldwide, training the next generation of engineers who carry that expertise with them wherever they go.
